Hearing Voices

Bm G7
I awoke in half a dream, and
hearing voices, hearing voices
Bm
G7
Hearing halfdreamed
confidences, offering me the key
Bm
G7
Speaking from inside my lost
tooth - I strained to listen, strained to listen:
Bm
G A Bm
“Just let go your solid
chains and taste eternity.”
G F# Bm
Voices tell us what to do -
Sometimes they’re kindly, sometimes stern
G F# Bm G A Bm
And it’s our calling to
discern when we should answer, and when we should say no.
Bm G7
Crazy old man at the bus stop’s
hearing voices, hearing voices
Bm G7
In his gap-toothed smile I
sense a strained intensity
Bm
G7
It could be he’s a prophet -
but he’s probably crazy, he’s probably just crazy
Bm
G A Bm
I recall how in my dream my
lost tooth set me free.
G F# Bm
Voices tell us what to do -
Sometimes they’re madness, sometimes real
G F# Bm
G A Bm
We only know by what we feel
when we should answer, and when we should say no.
Bm G7
Everyone who’s listening is
hearing voices, hearing voices
Bm G7
But the harder part is to
determine what they say
Bm
G7
Thank you friends, it’s wild
down here but it’s time to surface, time to surface
Bm
G A Bm
I will choose to ponder these
strange thoughts another day.
G F# Bm
Voices tell us what to do -
Sometimes they’re kindly, sometimes stern
G F# Bm
G A Bm
And it’s our calling to
discern when we should answer, and when we should say no.
